Japanese grammar 「〜んです (ndesu)」is a difficult grammar to understand.

However, it is a very convenient grammar and one that Japanese people use often.


This grammar will allow you to get help from Japanese people when you encounter trouble in various situations!


First of all, 「〜んです (ndesu) has the same meaning as 「です (desu)」, but it is different as it feels a little more personal. It is also used to ask or to give an explanation about a certain situation.


Let me introduce the most useful expressions which is 「〜んですが… (ndesuga…)」today!

Let’s think about this situation together… you are at Tokyo station in Japan.

When you want to buy a ticket to Shinjuku station but do not know how to buy.

「新宿駅(しんじゅくえき)へ 行(い)きたいんですが…」

When you are looking for a coin locker to leave your luggage but do not know where to find one.

「コインロッカーを探(さが)しているんですが…」

When you lost your ticket and want to ask someone for help.

「切符(きっぷ)をなくしたんですが…」


With this grammar 「〜んですが… (ndesuga…)」, you can ask Japanese people for help and solve the problem

Besides explaining about a certain situation, there are also many other usage of 「〜んです (ndesu)」


For example, 「どうしたんですか (What’s the matter?)」(in a situation where the speaker observes the other person condition)

「いつ日本へ行くんですか (When are you going to Japan?)」(to request further information about the subject)
