After Work? How to Use "〜ところ" to share your timing!

As a Japanese teacher, I often notice how small details in the language can make a big difference in communication.
One expression I really love to teach is “〜ところ” — it’s simple, but it shows a very Japanese way of being precise about timing. ⏰✨
In Singapore, people might just say “I’m going home,” and that’s enough.
But in Japan, we like to share exactly when we are going home — before, during, or just after.
It feels polite, and it helps others decide if it’s a good time to invite you. ☺️
Let’s imagine you just finished work in Japan, and someone asks you out.
Which phrase should you use?
仕事から帰るところです (Shigoto kara kaeru tokoro desu.)– “I’m just about to leave work.” 🏢
You’re still inside your office or just outside the building.
If a colleague invites you near the office, you might happily say yes — it’s convenient! 🧳

仕事から帰っているところです (Shigoto kara kaetteiru tokoro desu.)– “I’m on my way home from work.” 🚋
You’re already on the train.
In Japan, it’s polite not to talk on the phone in trains 📵, so you might send a short message instead: “I’m going home now.” 📱

仕事から帰ったところです (Shigoto kara kaetta tokoro desu.)– “I’ve just arrived home from work.” 🏠
You’re inside your house or very close to it.
If a colleague invites you back to the office area, it may feel too far.
But if it’s a local friend nearby, you might be glad to go out! 🎉

“〜ところ” is a small expression, but it tells the listener exactly what stage you are in.
Next time someone invites you, try using it! You’ll sound natural — and maybe you’ll catch the perfect timing for ramen 🍜 with friends! 🥳
