"ぐらい" vs "ごろ" — Both Mean "About," But They're Not the Same

If you've studied Japanese for a while, you've probably learned that ぐらい and ごろ both translate to "about" or "around."

So they should be interchangeable, right?

Let's test that.

"10時(じ)ぐらいに会(あ)いましょう" and "10時(じ)ごろに会(あ)いましょう" both sound completely natural.

But "5分(ふん)ぐらい待(ま)ってください" works fine, while "5分(ふん)ごろ待(ま)ってください" doesn't actually make sense.

Same English translation, very different results.

Here's the underlying logic.

ぐらい measures amounts: quantity, size, length of time, degree.

Money, weight, duration, anything countable can take ぐらい. ごろ, on the other hand, marks a point in time: a specific moment, or a period somewhere on a longer timeline.

That's why "5分(ふん)" (a length of time) only takes ぐらい.

It's an amount, and ごろ was never built to handle amounts; it's a tool for pointing at a spot, not measuring a stretch.

But "10時(じ)" is a point on the clock, so it can take either word.

ごろ fits naturally because it's a point.

ぐらい also works because its true meaning isn't "amount" exactly, it's closer to "approximate degree," and a moment in time can be reframed as a kind of degree too.

Think of it as two circles. ぐらい is the bigger one, covering both amounts and points in time.

ごろ is a smaller circle inside it, specializing only in points, but signaling clearly: "this is about time."

That's why "一万円(いちまんえん)ごろ" sounds wrong.

You're describing a quantity while reaching for a tool built specifically for moments in time.

So next time, don't ask "is this about time?"

Ask: am I describing an amount, or pointing at a spot on a timeline?
