    「が」or 「の」in sub clause?

    Read the following sentences

    ◯ 1)これは先生が飲んだヤクルトです。

    ◯ 2)これは先生の飲んだヤクルトです。

    ☓ 3)これは先生の朝 飲んだヤクルトです。

In intermediate level, you learn how a sentence modifies a noun. When a sentence modifies a noun, plain form is used. Point b below shows the sentence that is modifying the noun. To modify ヤクルト, you need to form the plain form of 飲みました (see point c below).

And in the sub clause,「が」, instead of 「は」, is used to indicate the subject (see point d below).

    a)これはヤクルトです。

    b)これは「先生は飲みました」ヤクルトです。

    c)これは「先生は飲んだ」ヤクルトです。

    d)これは「先生が飲んだ」ヤクルトです。

Some of my students asked whether its possible to use 「の」instead of「が」. The answer is YES, but only when there are no other words between the subject and the verb in the sub clause.

For instance, you can say 「これは先生の飲んだヤクルトです」 (see example sentence 2 above). But you cannot say 「これは先生の朝 飲んだヤクルトです」 (see example sentence 3 above).

PS: I like original flavour of ヤクルト most~
